MY STORY
Why did I become a health coach?
Ever since I can remember, the mind/body connection has been important to me. I have always suffered from stress and found that balancing the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of life really helped me to keep stress under control, but as I got older and had more and more responsibilities, I neglected this balance. I started having anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia. I couldn't eat and lost alot of weight. I could barely function. I was completely burnt out. It was a vicious cycle that was unbreakable. Doctors would say "It's just anxiety". They gave me Lorazepam to take if I had panic attacks and sent me on my way. I didn't have anything going on that should have caused this, but it was happening. What was wrong with me?
How I Went From Burnout to Bliss
It took me a long while to realize that this was happening because I wasn't taking care of myself. When you become a mom, you no longer put yourself first, but all of my energy went into not only taking care of my family, but being there for friends and community, and trying to catch up with our farm work and house chores which were never ending. I was emotionallly, physically, and mentally exhausted because I just could not keep up with the constant demands coming at me from all directions, but I just kept going and going until I just couldn't anymore.
So, how did I go from burnout to bliss? I started forcing myself to eat healthy meals. I began doing yoga again. I spent time with people I really enjoyed being with. I started going outside for walks and enjoyment, rather than just to work in the yard or field. I started saying "no". I finally began to get some sleep. I looked at my life to see what I wanted to change, what I could change, and how I could do it. It took a long time and baby steps, but I was able to get to a point where I am happier and healthier than I've ever been. I'm not going to say it was easy, and this will always be an ongoing journey, but I have the tools I need now so that I won't get burnt out ever again.
How Can I Help?
It is so easy for women to get burnt out. I hear stories, like mine, where doctors say "It's just stress" or "It's just anxiety". The doctor might recommend a therapist, and for some this might be needed, but I think many women just need to take time to work on their own goals and make sure they are practicing self care. I wish I had a professional to supprt me when I needed to recover from being burnt out, so here I am. My primary mission, though, is to prevent the burnout before it happens.
